Kingfish, Mahi-mahi, and snapper catch from South Florida deep sea fishing

Summer Time Catch Spotlight: Targeting Blackfin Tuna off Palm Beach

When summer hits South Florida, the offshore action heats up fast. While bottom fishing for snapper remains a staple on the reef, summer drift trips also offer thrilling encounters with fast-moving pelagics, like this awesome Blackfin Tuna landed on the Lady K!

Understanding the Summer Blackfin Tuna Run

Blackfin Tuna are built for speed and muscle. During the summer, schools of blackfin push along the Florida Current edge and over deep reef structures off Lantana and Lake Worth Inlet.

  • Where They Feed: They are commonly found feeding along depth contours where current pushes baitfish over structure.
  • The Fight: Ounce-for-ounce, Blackfin Tuna are among the hardest-fighting fish on light-to-medium tackle. Expect sudden, powerful runs and tight vertical circles once they get under the boat.
  • On the Table: Blackfin offers high-quality, rich red meat that is exceptional for fresh sushi, seared tuna steaks, or grilled skewers.

How We Target Tuna on the Drift

Catching pelagics on a drift boat comes down to staying sharp while fishing the entire water column:

  • Drifting Deep & Mid-Water: While bottom rigs target snapper, floating or mid-depth baits drifted in the current frequently pick up passing tuna and kingfish.
  • Fresh Bait: Using fresh cut bait or live pilchards/sardines creates a natural scent trail that brings inquisitive pelagics right to the rail.

Bringing Home Dinner

When a tuna or kingfish hits the deck, our crew immediately bleeds and ice-packs the catch to preserve meat quality. Back at Sportsman’s Park Marina, we filet and bag your fish so you can take it straight to a local cook-your-catch restaurant or home to the grill.

Come and join us on the Lady K Fishing Charter to enjoy some summer time fun and a great day of fishing!
