When the ocean conditions line up off the Palm Beach County coast, you know you’re in for an epic day on the water. On a recent drift trip aboard the Lady K, our anglers put on a masterclass in offshore action, highlighted by an incredible haul that included four 20-pound Blackfin Tunas alongside some fast-moving Kingfish!
High-Speed Pelagic Action off the Lantana Reef
Summer and warm Atlantic currents bring fast-moving gamefish pushing right along the edge of the Gulf Stream and local reef drop-offs. Because the continental shelf sits so close to shore here in Lantana, Florida, we don’t have to travel for hours to reach deep, productive water.
On this trip, as the boat drifted over the structure, the mid-water and surface lines lit up. Blackfin Tuna are built purely for muscle and speed. Ounce-for-ounce, a 20-pound Blackfin is one of the hardest-fighting pelagics you can hook on medium tackle, delivering blisteringly fast initial runs followed by deep, tight vertical circles under the boat!

The Secret to Bringing 20lb Tunas to the Rail
Success on a drift boat comes down to presentation and fresh bait. Here’s how the trip came together:
- Fresh Bait from the Dock: Before pushing off, we stocked up on fresh bait right at Bar Jack Fish Tales: our on-site bait and tackle shop located right where the boat docks.
- Drifting the Water Column: While bottom rigs worked the reef structure for snapper, staggered surface and mid-depth drift lines picked up passing tuna in the current.
- Teamwork on Deck: Landing four 20-pound tunas requires quick deck work. Our deckhands were right there to gaff the fish, clear adjacent lines, and immediately get the catch into ice-cold fish boxes to preserve top-tier meat quality.
From Dockside to Dinner Table
After an incredible day out on the Atlantic, we tied back up at Sportsman’s Park Marina. Our crew fileted and bagged all four 20lb tunas right at the dock, leaving everyone with bags of rich, fresh red meat perfect for seared tuna steaks, fresh sushi, or grilled skewers.
Pro-Tip for Guests: Want the ultimate local experience? Take your fresh Blackfin Tuna fillets straight to one of Lantana’s nearby waterfront “Cook-Your-Catch” restaurants to have them prepared for you right after your trip!
